By its very definition, Fashion has long been obsessed with the image. It is little wonder that photographers have consistently taken the cue to create sometimes ironic, often witty, and always striking self-references in their photographs. These visual puns are innately appealing; we feel like we’re in on the joke, part of the crowd. In literary theory, self-reflexive embedding is referred to as ‘mise en abyme’ which somewhat liberally translates as ‘into the abyss’; the notion that an idea can perpetually continue to infinity; a concept that’s quite neatly summed up by Massive Attack: I was lookin’ back to see if you were lookin’ back at me to see me lookin’ back at you
